It is well-known that the first wave of Chinese settlers in Boston Chinatown had arrived by the 1870s after the construction of the transcontinental railroad and the development of leather and garment industries in the South Cove area. Some of the settlers were believed to have come from the group of 75 pioneering Chinese laborers who worked in Calvin Sampson?s shoe factory in North Adams. (Member access)
