Most people picture Maine as the home of taciturn Yankee lobstermen and · lumberjacks. To a large extent the popular conception is right. The 2000 census found that Maine is the whitest state in the union. However, Asians are now Maine's largest non-white racial group and the Chinese are the largest Asian group numbering 2,034 in 2000.
